SIL2 Hydrogen Disruption System: innovation in rail transport

Eletech, Head of the International Design Centers of Elemaster, R&D division of the Group, continues to excel in railway engineering through advanced solutions that enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in rail transport. The SIL2 Hydrogen Cut-off Switch, implemented in Italy’s first hydrogen train, a project developed in direct collaboration with one of the main player of the sector, is a crucial innovation addressing the critical challenges of the industry.

Description of the SIL2 Hydrogen Disruption System

The SIL2 system is designed to promptly respond to abnormal accelerations during train operation. Using independent accelerometers, the system constantly monitors acceleration variations. When an anomaly is detected, it automatically closes the hydrogen supply valve, minimising risks and ensuring an immediate response in emergency situations.

Operation and main features

The system is based on a dual-channel safety architecture with independent accelerometers and STM32 microcontrollers, ensuring a high level of reliability and operational safety. It is capable of detecting acceleration variations up to 12g, with a configurable bandwidth from 1Hz to 180Hz, adapting to different operating conditions.

Key Features:

  • Dual-channel safety architecture based on independent accelerometers
  • Detection of accelerations up to ±12g, with configurable bandwidth
  • Hardware design compliant with EN 50129 SIL2
  • Software design developed according to EN 50657 SIL2
  • External Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) managed by TÜV
  • Certified compliance with EN 60529

Test and verification

The system has undergone rigorous testing to guarantee reliability and compliance with safety standards. This includes:

  • Development of a HIL (Hardware in the Loop) test bench, allowing functional tests in a simulated environment
  • Type testing and failure injection tests, ensuring system strength and robustness
  • Code coverage analysis, verifying that all parts of the code have been thoroughly tested

These tests ensure the system functions properly under all operating conditions, minimising the risk of failure.

Innovation and sustainability in the project

Through a sustainability-driven approach, Eletech has developed a groundbreaking SIL2 system for hydrogen power interruption, achieving excellence in railway technological innovation. The system has been designed following Ecodesign guidelines, with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and reducing overall environmental impact. The device is engineered to ensure durability and upgradeability, aligning with sustainable development goals.

Advanced safety for the future of rail

The SIL2 Hydrogen Cut-off Switch is a tangible example of technological innovation and enhanced railway safety. This solution not only protects passengers and personnel but also enables more efficient and environmentally sustainable management of energy resources in the rail sector.

Looking ahead, Eletech remains committed to developing advanced solutions that integrate safety, efficiency, and sustainability, addressing the emerging challenges in rail transport.
